The Family Partners Webinar is a free, online program for families of new students at the University of Virginia. The program will provide information about the college experience, common challenges, and available resources. Participants will be able to click a link or call a phone number to participate in a live, weekly presentation, and a recording will be available for those who cannot participate in the live sessions.
This program is designed for families who do not have a lot of experience with college, especially with sending a student away to a large, four-year university. Others may benefit, but the focus will be upon helping those families build an understanding of the challenges and opportunities that their student may have at UVA.
What will the program be about?
Each week, a different faculty or staff member will lead a one-hour webinar. They will provide information and discuss challenges and opportunities related to a topic in their area of expertise. Each session will include both a presentation and time for questions. Some topics include: Student Wellness and Stress; Money Matters; Academic Struggles; the Relationship between Major and Career; and Opportunities Abroad. We have 9 sessions planned. (The program will run for 8 weeks; one week will include an extra session for those whose students who are thinking about medical school.)
What is the purpose of this program?
Starting college—or changing colleges—can be a difficult transition for any student. Students who have lots of family members and neighbors who graduated from college can draw upon that experience for advice and support. We hope that by helping the families who have less experience with college understand what it’s like, their students’ transitions will be a little bit easier. In fact, many of the presenters for this program were the first in their families to graduate from college, and they’re excited to talk to other families about what it’s like.
Who should sign up?
This program is designed for families who do not have a lot of experience with college, especially with sending students away to a large, four-year university. Others may benefit, but the focus will be upon helping those families build an understanding of the challenges and opportunities that their student will face.
Parents, other family members, guardians, mentors, or others who expects to be a source of support for the student during their time in college are welcome to participate.
Please note that while some students received information about the program, it not designed for students themselves to participate.
How will you access each session?
Each week we will email a phone number and link that will allow you to participate in one of three ways, using the Zoom webinar program. You will be able to join from anywhere using a phone or internet connection. You will have three options to participate each week: First, you can use a link to watch the presentation live and submit any questions you may have. Second, you can call a phone number, enter a code, and listen to the presentation without video. Third, if you are not available during the scheduled time, you will be able to access a recording of each session using a link that will be emailed each week.
Webinars on Zoom are similar to a Skype or FaceTime call, except that you will not be visible to other participants or to the presenters. Only the presenters will be on camera. If you participate on a computer or smartphone, you will be able to submit questions using a chat tool. If you prefer to just call in using a regular phone number, then you will just be able to listen to the audio.
What will you need in order to participate?
You will need access to email, in order to receive each week’s phone number and log-in instructions. You will also need either an internet or long-distance phone connection to participate each week. See above for details.
What does the program cost?
There is no fee for this program or for the Zoom webinar software that we will use.
Do you have to participate in every session?
No, you can participate whenever your schedule allows. If you want to see a session you missed, you will be able to watch a recording using a link that will be emailed each week.
