Outside of the Classroom

Outside of the Classroom

There are lots of ways you can explore your interests and develop skills and knowledge outside of the classroom. Studying abroad, getting involved with a research project, or working with service organizations are all ways that you can develop problem-solving skills, figure out what kind of work you like to do, and grow as a person.

Get Involved with Research

Research isn't just for students interested in grad school or med school. Being part of a lab or project can help you learn to work as part of a team, figure out how to match questions to ways they can be answered, and learn more about a subject area.

The team at the Office of Citizen Scholar Development can help you find ways to get started. See their website for tips, contact information, and a drop-in workshop series.

Serve Your Community

Whether you wish to serve your community of peers at UVA, contribute to the vibrant Charlottesville community, or go beyond, there are resources and programs available to help you connect you with those around you and show you ways to strengthen and build communities, and learn and grow as a person. The Public Service Pathways program can keep you informed of opportunities while also helping you to reflect on your development as a citizen and individual. Madison House offers service opportunities as well as leadership training.

Gain Experience with an Internship

Internships are a great way to gain experience and build skills. They can also help you to decide what kind of work you are interested in doing. If you are interested in finding, applying for, or funding an internship, the UVA Career Center can help. If you're thinking globally, then you can also learn about opportunities for internships in other countries from Education Abroad. They can explain how to find these opportunities, funding to help make them possible, and what you can expect from such a position.

Study Abroad in Dozens of Countries

College can be a great time to go abroad. You can travel with the support of a program, complete coursework, connect with great people, and learn new skills. UVA students study abroad in about 50 countries every year. Connect with Education Abroad to learn about program options, language requirements, financial considerations, and more. It's always a good idea to start planning early!

Join a Student Organization

Student organizations at UVA are called CIOs, or Contracted Independent Organizations. Students in these organizations play an important role in building community and offering opportunities for their peers. The Student Engagement team helps to coordinate CIOs, works with Student Council, and offers structured leadership development programs. Check out the Hoos Involved platform to connect with events and organizations online.

Pursue a Fellowship

What is a fellowship? In short, they are opportunities to engage in research, service, or study, and they typically comes with financial support. Some of these are well-known: Fulbright Awards, Rhodes Scholarships, Truman Scholarships. There are dozens of others, and one of these opportunities may be right for you. As the Office of Citizen Scholar Development explains, "Fellowships provide support for academic, professional, and/or personal growth. Much of the support is financial but may also be logistical or social, and these opportunities may include study, research, travel, internships, entrepreneurial endeavors, or other professional placement." Connect with them today to learn more!
